With the release of Generative AI and ChatGPT earlier this year, I am seeing wide-spread fear, denial, and trepidation from both students and colleagues regarding AI. In today’s rapidly evolving world, technology is reshaping the landscape of education and the future of work and students are at the forefront of this revolution.
As a career and life design educator whose job is to help prepare students for the future and future of work, I believe we have a duty to teach students how to ethically and responsibly harness these tools to support their educational and professional goals, as Generative AI is very likely going to be an integral part of their workplace landscapes.
In today’s fast-evolving educational landscape, staying ahead of the curve is no longer a choice—it’s a necessity. The future of technology and the future of work will focus on students’ abilities to hone and develop their skills and embrace lifelong learning, which includes reskilling and upskilling to emerging technologies like AI. A viral meme on the internet aptly states: “AI will not replace you, but the person using AI will.”
To support faculty, students and staff in learning how to ethically and responsibly use Generative AI tools, I created and implemented numerous trainings in 2023/2024. A recap of those sessions is below:
